Godzilla Minus One - King Of the Monster Movies
With a budget of LESS than $15 million, Takashi Yamazaki (writer, director AND visual effects) has absolutely shown all of American cinema that YES you can make a fully developed, well produced and artful film for less than it costs to buy a mid-sized nation.
I cannot speak well enough about this movie! As a life-long Godzilla fan, I have to say, watching this film made me feel like I did as a child watching the first Godzilla films. Everytime Godzilla appeared on screen my heart would pound with excitement and joy. It was classic Japanese Godzilla for a modern age.
With all the elements that make up great traditional Japanese cinema; Beautiful heartfelt drama steeped in the classic struggle of love, duty and honor versus selfish desires, insecurity and fear. Woven expertly with everything you loved about Classic Godzilla movies; Mass wanton destruction and inevitability of horrific loss. Who better to show us the seamless blend of the classic and the modern, than the Japanese?
Not only will this movie excite and enslave you to what is happening on the screen, it will break you heart, put it back together, break it again, and then hand you a new one.
I cannot recommend this film enough. It has all the hallmarks of not only GREAT Classic Japanese Cinema, but just a damn good good movie to show all of Hollywood just how it’s done.
