The MarVels - Not Quite.
While 'The Marvels' serves up a decent dose of fun, showcasing great camaraderie among its leads, it doesn't quite soar to the heights of the MCU's best. Iman Vellani, reprising her role as Kamala Khan, steals the show with her infectious enthusiasm, embodying the awkward Avenger fan-girl with charm. The Khan family, portrayed by Zenobia Shroff, Saagar Shaikh, and Mohan Kapoor, adds warmth and authenticity to the narrative.
One commendable aspect is the humanization of Carol Danvers, skillfully executed in the sequences aboard her ship. Brie Larson's performance shines in these moments, making her character more relatable and likable. Teyonah Parris's introduction as Captain Rambeau is a welcome addition, promising intriguing developments for her character in future MCU installments.
'The Marvels' delivers on the MCU's trademark action, with well-choreographed sequences that keep the audience engaged. The chemistry between Vellani, Larson, and Parris is a definite highlight, contributing to the film's overall appeal.
However, the film is not without its flaws. A musical sequence on Aladna feels out of sync with the rest of the movie, coming across as unnecessary and disrupting the narrative flow. The antagonist, Dar-Benn, lacks the menacing presence that could have elevated the stakes. With such a relatable motivation behind her, I have to ask why that was not explored further? This seemed like an excellent opportunity to bring another ambiguous big bad akin to Thanos, to the screen. Where Zawe Ashton definitely worked well with what she was given, she could have been given a lot more meat to chew on, so to speak.
In summary, 'The Marvels' may not be a groundbreaking addition to the MCU. While it falls short of the franchise's top-tier offerings, it succeeds in delivering a lighthearted, enjoyable, and entertaining experience.
Though I can’t help but feel like we are missing something. Maybe more of the plot was left on the cutting room floor along with Dar-Benn’s character development?
Iman Vellani's standout performance, coupled with fun action and a strong ensemble cast, makes this film a worthwhile watch. Despite its flaws, 'The Marvels' manages to capture the essence of superhero escapades. Not quite the four course meal of MCU past, but, decent snack nonetheless.
